School has been going on for a week, but the weather is still as hot as ever. Why not cool off with some Aguas Frescas?

NAK Sigma Chapter will be in the McKee Breezway on Wednesday, September 1 from 10 AM to 2 PM selling Horchata and Agua de Melon. The drinks will be offered with a minimum $2 donation.

The proceeds of the event will benefit our annual NAKland Childrens’ Carnival, a free event for children in Greeley that is held in the spring. So come cool off while supporting the kids! Hope to see you there!

If you have ever had any questions about Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, or want to meet the gentlemen of Nu Alpha Kappa while participating in some fun social events, you are invited to come to the many events that the chapter has organized. Event highlights include a bowling event with the ladies of Pi Lambda Chi, sports with our CSU Chapter, a community service/social event with the Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, and another social event with the Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority.

A highlight of the week includes a viewing of the movie “La Mission,” starring Benjamin Bratt. The movie will be shown on Thursday, September 9 in the University Center, Spruce Room B. Informational meetings will also be held in the University Center.

Nu Alpha Kappa Sigma Chapter's new website.

The site was built by Tom Lucero, an alumni from the Colorado State University Mu Chapter. Lucero, the owner of Fort Collins based Poudre Communications, did the work for the Sigma Chapter on a pro-bono basis.

The site was created using WordPress, Java and jQuery, all of which are compatible with many modern mobile devices and web browsers. “I predict that many students at UNC would visit the site from their mobile devices, such as an iPhone or an Android smartphone,” said Lucero. “I felt that creating by creating a site completely in Flash, the Sigma brothers would miss out on a chance to make a positive first impression with UNC students. There are many technologies out there that can do much of the same things that Flash can do the same, if not better.”

The website can be updated quickly by brothers with little or no website experience. There is no software that needs to be installed on any computer, allowing any brother with an internet connection to update the site. There are Android and iPhone apps available for on-the-go updates.

Chapter President Carlos Cruz indicated that the chapter brothers are very satisfied with the site.

Poudre Communications was started in July 2010 with the vision of providing affordable web design, website management, and social media management services to small businesses, non-profit organizations and religious organizations. Poudre Communications can be found at www.poudrecommunications.com.

This year’s conference saw brothers from across California, Colorado and Nevada to converge upon the UNC campus. The highlight of the weekend was the first ever community service project that was held in conjunction with NLDC. Men from the 20 chapters of Nu Alpha Kappa came to the Al Frente de Lucha Community Center to particpate in a beautification project.

Al Frente De Lucha was created to organize, establish and carry out programs designed for the advancement of Chicano/Mexicano community leadership in Weld County, Colorado and to combat absenteeism amongst Chicano/Mexicano students in Weld County educational institutions. They hope that through their efforts, they can lower the drop out rate amongst Chicano/Mexicano Students in Weld County Schools.  By encouraging persons to improve their conditions through the exercise of the democratic, constitutional and legal rights of self-expression, self-organization, and participation in decision-making, policies and program affecting their lives, they can achieve the full participation by such persons in the benefits and responsibilities of first class citizenship in this society. A further purpose of Al Frente is to aid individuals in achieving their full potential and a sense of dignity and self-respect; to provide a focus and forum for developing programs and ideas designed to improve the community and the environment in Weld County, Colorado.”

NLDC was started in 1998 with the mission to empower the leadership of Nu Alpha Kappa with the skills to run their chapter effectively during the upcoming school year. NLDC is an annual event to prepare our undergraduate chapter officers and emerging leaders for the coming academic year. Chapters send delegates to NLDC in order to learn skills relating to their elected positions, gain perspectives on chapter operations from other members and bond with the brothers from each chapter.
